At least last night's temperature stayed the right side of zero which was nice - though tonight I think we may once again plunge into the icy regions. It was, however, quite cold enough to make the prospect of lean meat, served with salad a less appealing option for dinner, so I took to a big bowl of pea and ham instead. And to make matters worse, it was accompanied by a small loaf of soda bread since i was unable to find any bread in the fridge or the freezer. At least the use of the oven warmed up the kitchen so the whole house was pleasantly warm. Today was once again a mix of lowering grey skies and bright sparkling sunshine With some fog and misty rain thrown in for variety. Needless to say this was the day I had volunteered to do some drystone walling. Fortunately the heroic crowds that usually turn up for this sort of thing were limited to two others, so once we had the broken section of the fence in order, we called it a day. Here is today's effort (embarrassingly short section really) That enormously long stone that Eleanor is leaning on is a through-stone, necessary to tie both faces of the wall together. Ideally it would have been one course further down into the wall, but the base stone on this section (which is over a metre long, so we were not going to argue with it) was positioned so that it sloped outward (not a good thing, as you want your stones to fall back into the wall, not out of it), and it took a couple of courses for us to correct that flaw. Still, with a final course (the capstones are temporary we just ran out of worthwhile rocks) on top it should work just fine.
